Unfortunately, my grandfather never heard Sir Francis speak of his sister Jane; though his mother and Aunt Fanny were both devoted to the novels, and he knew them all while still a boy from hearing them read aloud. Just as I knew them myself.

My grandfather was a most delightful man with an encyclopaedic memory for facts of every kind. He had travelled a great deal, so he had much to tell that was worth hearing.'
