'I knew of a Miss Jane and a Miss Florence Austen, who were very kind in lending material when my mother and grandfather were writing their book, 'Jane Austen's Sailor Brothers,' in 1904 – but the two Miss Austens are dead, and I am afraid all their things were sold, most of them going to American collectors.
However, Cassandra's sketch of Jane, which was lent by Miss Jane Austen for reproduction in the book, turned up again for sale at Christies in 1948 and is now safely in the National Portrait Gallery.
The Topaz crosses, which Charles bought as presents for Cassandra and Jane with his prize money, and which are illustrated in the book, were bought by a nice American, a Mr. Charles Hogan, whom I met. I don't remember that he mentioned having bought anything else.'
— Miss Helen Brown.
