Born September 10th 1855.
Educated at Christ's Hospital (Blue Coat School.)
'I have in my possession what we have always treasured as the Family Bible, with this inscription, 'The Gift of the Governors of Christ's Hospital to Charles John Austen the 18th day of July, 1870.'
— His son, Herbert Gray Austen.
He later became a Telegraphist, at Wellington, Shropshire.
Married, April 24th 1880, Margaret Ann Parry.
'My mother was Housekeeper to Sir Arthur and Lady Herbert at Coldbrook Park for over 20 years.'

Charles John Austen died February 13th 1896, at the age of 41 – and was buried at Wellington, having had issue:

'My eldest brother Charles started his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, but gave it up to work as a driver as he was passionately fond of horses.'
He worked for the C.W.S. First at Roden, near Shrewsbury, and later in Shrewsbury (driving a bread van.)
He married, in 1903, Elizabeth Love – and died in 1905.
Was buried at Shrewsbury.
