Edward Austen, later Knight [2] continued.
High Sheriff 1823.
Justice of the Peace. Deputy Lieutenant.
He took up residence at Chawton in 1826 and remained there all his life – disposing of the bulk of the Godmersham estate in 1874.
Married, first, in May 1826, Mary Dorothea, eldest daughter, by his first marriage, of Sir Edward Knatchbull, Bart. of Mersham Hatch – whose second wife was Edward's elder sister, Fanny Catherine.
Mary Dorothea died February 22nd 1838, and was buried at Chawton, (Epitaph page 221) having had issue:
