The operation started on August 29th 1848 and lasted until October 16th. Lieut. W.W. Knight was in command of a company of the Rifle Brigade – and when the expedition was concluded the Riflemen had marched between 1,100 and 1,200 miles, their clothing was in shreds and their shoes worn off their feet.
He married, in 1849, Henrietta Frances, daughter of Lt. Col. Armstrong, Cape Mounted Rifles. She died in 1891. Wyndham William Knight, of Bilting House, Wye, Kent – a Justice of the Peace, died September 17th 1918, having had issue:

Married, April 20th 1882, Mary Augustus Repps, youngest daughter of the Rev. Henry Evans-Lombe of Bylaugh Park, Norfolk. By her (who died March 26th 1932) he had issue one daughter, Mary Dorothea, born 1883 – who married, October 25th 1904, Charles George Field-Marsham J.P.
