Henry Rice [3] continued.
The 1st Battalion, 72nd Foot arrived at Barbadoes from Gibraltar, on board the 'Bombay' transport, on March 14th 1848, having been a month in passage.
Captain Henry Rice died of fever on November 28th 1848, two days after his 27th birthday – and was buried at St. Anne's. (Epitaph page 229.)
'Henry was one of the most handsome of ten tall, good-looking brothers. He was full of animation and very popular in Society. After his death, letters to his parents from brother officers tell of their admiration for his patience and fortitude throughout his illness, and also of his strong Christian faith which made a deep impression on them.'

Born January 31st 1823 at Godmersham Park.
'Probably his father discerned that his physique was unsuited for the life of either the Navy or Army, and he must also have recognized that he was a boy of great ability. Accordingly he was sent to Eton, and fulfilled all hopes, being Newcastle Scholar in 1842. It is customary for such Etonians to pass on to Trinity College, Cambridge; but Morland matriculated at Merton College, Oxford, as an Exhibitioner, in 1843. Doubtless Oxford was the choice as his father was an Oxford man.
Here, sad to say, just before his final Schools in 1846, he had a disastrous accident which affected not only his immediate future, but the whole of his subsequent life. He ...
