... sharp and critical with children, and though said to be 'very witty', those on whom her humour was expended might be forgiven if they did not always appreciate it. Perhaps it may sometimes have been the same in the case of Aunt Jane herself! But underneath this somewhat caustic wit, Aunt May was kindness itself. She was a devoted wife and mother, very popular with her brothers and sisters and a most generous hostess. Maxwelton was a delightful house in which to stay.'

Passed his examination and was appointed Mate in the 'Vindictive' 2 guns, on May 8th 1847.
Acting Lieutenant of the 'Daring', October 4th 1847, on the North America and West Indies Station.
Lieutenant, June 19th 1848.
Lieutenant, H.M.S. 'Lily' 4 guns, in the East Indies.
Lieutenant, H.M.S. 'Fox' 2 guns, October 8th 1852.
Commander, February 25th 1853.

His Obituary Notice reads:-
Died 18th Mar. 1853 at Dane Court, Kent, age 25, George William Rice, fourth son of Edward Royd Rice Esq. M.P. and a Commander R.N. He entered the service in 1843; ...
