Francis William Austen [2] continued.
... for promotion, which took place as soon as he had completed his time, on November 11th 1846.
His next appointment was on January 21st 1850, to the 'Hastings' of 72 guns – as Flag-Captain to his uncle, Rear-Admiral C.J. Austen C.B., on the East India and China station.
In 1852 he succeeded in taking the 'Hastings' to Rangoon, on the Irrawaddy, where her boats were actively employed during the closing operations of the Burmese War.
He accompanied the Rear-Admiral to Prome in the East India Company's steam sloop 'Pluto' – the vessel on board which his uncle, Admiral Austen, died on October 7th 1852.
The 'Hastings' was paid off on May 5th 1853.
Captain Austen received the India General Service medal, 1854 – with bar 'Pegu.'
He married, July 13th 1843, his cousin Frances Palmer, third daughter of his uncle, Rear-Admiral Charles John Austen C.B.
She died in 1882.

He died December 13th 1858, at the age of 49 – having had no issue.
