Matriculated from St. John's College, Oxford on April 29th 1830.
M.A. 1837.
Entered the Royal Navy, April 11th 1837, as Chaplain on board the 'Seringapatam' of 46 guns – Captain John Leith, with whom he served upwards of four years in the West Indies.
He was employed in the Mediterranean from November 1841 until the middle of 1844, in the Queen of 110 guns – flag-ship of Sir Edward Owen.
Appointed, November 20th 1844 to the 'Eagle' of 50 guns – Captain George Bohun Martin, fitting at Chatham; and from December 28th 1844, until paid off on June 16th 1848, was attached to the 'Vindictive' of 50 guns – flag-ship of his father, Sir Francis William Austen, K.C.B., on th North America and West India station.
His name appears in the list of Retired Chaplains in the Navy List of 1866.
He later became rector of Redhill, Havant; where he remained for 41 years – from 1856 until 1897.
He married, July 9th 1851, Louisa Jane, daughter of the Rev Thomas Heathcote Tragett. She was born in 1828 and died July 7th 1895 – being buried in Redhill Churchyard (Epitaph page 253).
