Herbert Grey Austen [2 ] continued.
He was appointed, November 30th 1841, to the 'Magicienne' of 24 guns – August 30th 1844 to the 'Excellent' once more and, on January 25th 1845, to the 'Vindictive' of 50 guns as Flag-Lieutenant to his father, Sir Francis William Austen, on the North America and West India station.
He was promoted to the rank of Commander, November 30th 1846 and commanded the 'Vesuvius' steam sloop of 280 horse-power, in the West Indies, from February 19th 1847 until paid off in September 1848.
On September 13th 1854 he was appointed Inspecting Commander in the Coastguard at Kilrush – which appointment he held until 1859.
He retired, with the rank of Captain, on July 1st 1864 – remaining on the Retired List until his death.
He received the Naval General Service medal (engraved 'H.G. Austen. Mate') with bar 'Syriah' and the St. Jean d'Acre medal (awarded by the Sultan of Turkey) in silver.
