From O'Byrne's Naval Biographical Dictionary:
This officer entered the Royal Navy (from the Royal Naval College) on June 25th 1830, as a Volunteer on board the 'Talbot' of 28 guns – employed at the Cape of Good Hope. He was appointed Mate, in 1834, of the 'Childers' of 16 guns, successively stationed in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Africa.
He passed his examination in steam in 1840.
After a period of service in the 'Excellent', gunnery ship at Portsmouth, and in the 'Medea' steam frigate – he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on November 23rd 1841.
