Retired, 1892.
Served in the Afghan War 1879-1880, as Colonel Commanding Royal Artillery, Khyber Force. He was mentioned in despatches and received the Afghan War medal.
Appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery, 1903 (which appointment he still held in 1911.)
He was twice married, and had three sons and one daughter.
